2017 is so last year! Three weeks into the New Year and opportunity is knocking for Sergeant and Inspector candidates aiming for promotion success. 2018 looks like a window of opportunity. At least according to recent information and the fact that promotion processes are actively ongoing.
Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, West Midlands, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire are all gearing up for promotion selection processes!
Some particularly determined and focused candidates hit the ground running on 4 January 2018, seizing the day to get ahead of the curve with some smart preparation at my first Masterclass of the year (next is 17 Feb!).

In 2015/16, there were 1,815 promotions. This included 1,089 Sergeant promotions, 432 Inspector promotions and 169 Chief Inspector promotions. You could say, ‘the 1%’.
In 2016/17, there were 3255 promotions: 3% of the 123,142 officers in England & Wales as at the end of the year. That’s over 1,100 more Sergeants and Inspectors promoted compared to the previous year. The highest proportion ever were female (27%). This doesn’t even include temporary promotions or those promoted on transfer from another force!
It’s been well documented that officer numbers continue to decline. They now at a level that was the norm for the 80’s, whereas population and the complexity of crime have boomed since then (hence the pressure on this thinning blue line). However, when it comes to promotion for the federated police ranks, you have to go back to 2009 to see numbers this high.
So a timely reminder that if you are aspiring to Sergeant or Inspector rank in 2018, it really could be you!
