Met Police Promotion: Inspector to Chief Inspector

This year, I’ve provided a wealth of bespoke leadership and promotion content for aspiring officers in the Metropolitan Police.

I began with guidance on the Sergeant’s gamified promotion system (S6E7) and senior officer assessment tests (S6E2). Then I dived deep on the Met’s Sergeant to Inspector process (S6E12) and associated Inspector’s Success Profile (S6E14). I’ve even given an Inspector Promotion Preparation Plan with a Met twist (S6E17) and reviewed for you the New Met for London plan (S6E18).

Following each episode, I’ve been contacted by officers at all levels, thanking me and saying how helpful and timely the content was for them. And if you think this is only relevant to Met Police promotion processes, you’ll be mistaken. The learning is transferable (e.g. prep plan, role of Inspector, forward-facing questions, scenarios) and other forces are already following suit.

There’s good reason my Police Promotion and Leadership Podcast is Number 1. As successful clients tell me, there’s nothing else like it. The content even seems to inspire the focus areas of other providers in the police leadership and promotion support arena. And you can access it all for just £4.99 per month.

Now as a premium subscriber you can access Season 6, Episode 19, “Inspector to Chief Inspector Promotion Assessments”. This is especially relevant and topical to the current promotion process for officers seeking to step up in the Met Police. That said, Inspectors seeking a third pip in other forces will also find tried, tested and proven tips and insights to support provincial force selection processes too.

Confused by what it takes for promotion? Been frustrated at the final fence before and want to get it right this time? Want to know what it takes? Then read on and listen to this new podcast content…

Time to Step Up, or Step Aside…

“Step up or step aside.” – Christopher Titus

Do you know the role of Chief Inspector? How is it different to the Inspector role? Both are covered in my Inspector and Chief Inspector combined toolkit.

In short, policing needs Chief Inspectors who can instill trust and confidence in officers, teams, partners and wider communities.

As a Chief Inspector, you will need to contribute to the strategic development of culture and working processes across departments. Ensuring adherence to standards, encouraging personal accountability, and promoting continuous improvement is important too. And in 2026, you’ll also need to demonstrate operational credibility.

Are you ready to work as part of the Senior Leadership Team, to improve performance and standards across the force as a whole? After all, it’s the bridge to Superintendent. Do you understand the concepts of police effectiveness and efficiency of service delivered to the public.

In this bespoke premium episode, I provide ideas and elements for an effective preparation plan, setting out exactly what you can do now to get ahead of the curve  in preparing for your Chief Inspector promotion opportunity. It’s especially relevant to the promotion process happening in the Met Police right now!

Tried, Tested and Proven…

My straightforward ©ENAMEL structure is one bespoke Rank Success method. ENAMEL works well for promotion candidates across different ranks, for both forward- and rear-facing interview questions. It ensures that at Chief Inspector, you demonstrate evidence of strategic thinking in your interview responses.

Clients often tell me that panel members have commented on the quality of their interview responses, clearly neatly packaging their evidence for promotion…

“Hi Steve, wanted to reach out & thank you for the excellent support & strategies for promotion in your videos & resources. I bought your bundle in the run up to my first board… I listened to the promotion masterclass video several times. In the board, I felt calm & structured using an amalgamated version of your ENAMEL framework… scoring 28/30 marks & a message from the DCI on the panel congratulating me for an excellent interview. Thank you!”

Consider for now this example presentation scenario question:

“Chief Inspector is a step up from Inspector; what is your understanding of that?”

This podcast is a deeper dive premium episode that compliments and supplements my Inspector and Chief Inspector digital toolkit, in which you’ll find detailed specific evidence, with examples at the level of the rank expected and CVF level being assessed. This is the complete package for effective preparation and leadership development at this rank.

The toolkit includes the role profile, functions and dimensions to help raise your awareness of leadership and performance expectations at the more strategic Inspecting ranks. With dozens of examples of promotion evidence, you’ll also get a clear idea of what good looks like.

Rank Success toolkits are transferable to support officers facing different UK force processes. There’s a FAQ page and aspiring individuals who simply want to hit the ground running to get ahead of the curve with effective preparation can do so at any time.

“Work hard in silence, let your success be your noise.” – Frank Ocean

Next, I share the stories of two Chief Inspectors, who share their personal success in career progression, continuous professional development (CPD), and repeated promotions, both prevailing in highly competitive selection processes…

Hope: Top 3, First Time Success, Inspector and Chief Inspector

“Only 3 passed from 31”

“Hello Steve, I just wanted to pop an email to say thank you… I passed my Inspector exam, started to read your blogs and downloaded your free material which was invaluable helping make sense of the CVF. I then purchased your digital toolkit. I went on to pass my Inspector board and was told I did extremely well. In my feedback I was encouraged to consider to go for Chief Inspector, my imposter syndrome kicked in and I doubted I was good enough as DI let alone above.

This year the Chief Inspector boards were announced and I was approached by SLT to apply. I hadn’t had any acting so wasn’t sure how it would go, I got the digital toolkits up and prepped. I’ve listened to your podcasts every day on my journey to and from work, popping to the shops or any opportunity. The way you simplify things and hearing your interviews has really helped me focus.  I even re listened to your interview with Lee Freeman on the way to my board yesterday.  I went in with my ENAMEL style approach to answers all prepared.

I have been told today I passed!  Only 3 passed from 31, so thank you sincerely, I wouldn’t have been able to do this without your podcasts, blogs, digital tool kits and you tube videos! I’ve encouraged lots over the last few years to visit your page.”

Paul: First Time Success Sgt, Inspector and Chief Inspector.

“10 passed from 34”

“Hi Steve, Just found out I passed my Chief Inspector board, so very pleased to say the least.10 passed from 34 at board stage after initial paper sifting. I’ve now passed Sgt, Insp and Chief Inspector first time, but I could not have done any of it without your help.

I bought the full package this time and read everything you suggested and more!

For me this time, the 121 coaching chats I found the most beneficial to float ideas, get feedback on things and importantly give me confidence when I was flagging near the end. It didn’t just help for promotion it has helped me improve overall. I am extremely grateful Steve, you were so helpful and I would highly recommend your services. Thanks again.”

Are You Future Focused?

I personally encourage aspiring promotion candidates to develop a bank of role specific, forward facing statements (the Met call it future focused). If you haven’t started on this yourself, no worries, I’d encourage you to prepare yours in a tangible written format, keep them under 40 words and aligned to specific leadership criteria for the rank being assessed.

Here are a couple of examples of Chief Inspector Level statements to support your thinking. I share a dozen examples of these in the podcast, together with insights and explanation of why this is a tried and tested element of effective preparation, especially for forward facing questions or presentations.

Ready, Steady, NO?

It can be helpful ahead of your promotion opportunity to think about your state of readiness and ask yourself some questions. In this podcast I also include a range of questions as a readiness self-assessment. Here’s three examples:

  1. Can I articulate specific actions I will take on culture change, professional standards & developing capability across teams that go beyond Inspector level activity?
  2. On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being high), how confident am I that I can demonstrate Chief Inspector level leadership that advances More Trust, Less Crime & High Standards?
  3. What is the single biggest remaining gap & the exact action I will take this week to close it?

There’s lots more content packed into this episode. I hope you enjoy the podcast and get great value from it. It offers insights into how Rank Success successfully supports aspiring officers to take action and prevail in highly competitive force promotion selection processes. Podcasts and toolkits are accessible 24/7, 365.

If you need further support, remember in this increasingly frustrating age of AI and human detachment, you can simply give me a call for a free 30-minute coaching session.

Kind Regards, Steve
