Oscar Kilo are the National Police Wellbeing Service. One of their flagship reports is the National Police Wellbeing Survey, which has just been published. This is just a quick update to let you know I’ve summarised some of the key points, and to explain why it’s important in the context of police promotion.
Wellbeing Report Summary in Latest Podcast

I’ve just produced another premium podcast episode (S3E26), where I cover the recently published National Police Wellbeing Survey 2023. This is a significant report with over 40,000 responses from people in policing. This means it’s hard for folk to comfortably ignore or do nothing about.
The Summary of Evidence and Insights report is from the National Wellbeing Service and Durham University. This briefing is an important one for aspiring police leaders to browse and comprehend. However, at 61 pages and full of academese jargon, dry descriptive statistics and such, you may be forgiven for not reading it in any depth.
Workloads, fatigue, stressors, intentions to leave, feeling supported and other matters impacting people are all covered. In this premium episode, I draw out some key points to take heed of as an aspiring police leader and why it’s important. I give an overview of various facets of the findings, while explaining what they mean in the real world. Most importantly, and which you won’t find elsewhere, I answer the ‘so what?’ in the context of your police leadership and promotion ambitions.

Why is Wellbeing Important?
“If we try to secure the well-being of others, we will, at the same time, create the conditions for our own.” – Dalai Lama
Officer and staff wellbeing is important simply because it’s the right thing to be looking out for. But here’s other reasons as to why it’s also important if you’re an aspiring police leader and promotion candidate:
- Wellbeing relates directly to the CVF behaviours, such as We Are Emotionally Aware.
- Leading wellbeing is also a core part of the increasingly common CVF value of Compassion, now used and alluded to by several UK police forces.
- For Inspectors and above, it’s good to have a more strategic understanding and overview of issues facing policing.
- Further, don’t be surprised when forces hit you with a ‘leading wellbeing’ related promotion board question or briefing scenario; possibly even one directly related to these Wellbeing Survey reports and findings!
I’ve also embedded above my free YouTube video on your role in leading wellbeing, as it’s packed full of insights and tips if you’re aspiring to police promotion.
Just as a reminder, here’s a link to the national wellbeing report again. I’d also encourage you to check with your own force to see bespoke, force-level results. These are available and have been sent already to lots of forces who had enough respondents. This will give you a more local understanding of the precise issues your colleagues are facing. It will also impress upon any interview panel you are well informed and mean business when it comes to painting a brighter picture of the future under your supportive leadership.
Kind Regards, Steve
