“Authenticity is the key to being an inspiring leader. But what does that really mean for your leadership, every day?” – Goffee and Jones

I summarise key aspects and link these to aspiring leaders and police promotion candidates looking to develop their CPD. This is valuable listening and food for thought for those aspiring to the Sergeant and Inspector / Chief Inspector ranks and beyond. Silencing a Room…

Police promotion podcast

In Why Should Anyone Be Led by You?, authors Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones break down the essential qualities of effective leadership, focusing on the importance of authenticity, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Rather than following a rigid leadership model of how leaders “should” be, the book encourages leaders to cultivate their unique qualities and create a deep connection with their followers.

The authors argue that this question is the toughest you can ask any leader. They go so far as say it is the best way to silence a room of executives. As a qualified executive coach, I go further into this question and its variations (e.g. “Why you, why now?”) in my more in-depth and structured promotion materials and coaching sessions. It makes a great practice police promotion board question!

In their approach, Goffee and Jones introduce a key concept: effective leadership is about knowing yourself and being able to bring your “authentic self” to the role. This requires embracing and leveraging your unique qualities, quirks and vulnerabilities, rather than masking them. The authors argue that when leaders are real, others find it easier to relate to them, leading to stronger, more resilient teams.

“Far too many organisations… are machines for the destruction of leadership. They encourage either conformists or role players with an impoverished sense of who they are and what they stand for.” – Goffee and Jones

Adaptability is another critical takeaway, or what the authors call “situational sensitivity.” Great leaders adjust their approach based on the needs of the situation and their followers, a skill that involves keen emotional intelligence and a deep understanding of what motivates different people. Being adept at reading your team(s) and situations can helps build trust and create a positive work environment.

So this book covers a range of concepts around authenticity, emotional intelligence, improving culture, and adaptability to mention a few. I hope you enjoy this book review podcast and the way I connect the key leadership concepts back to your CPD, the CVF, and other relevant points to your police promotion development.
