Without a plan to prepare for your Inspector police promotion opportunity, your chances of success are slim.
In a competitive promotion selection, whatever that process looks like, it’s (almost) always the best prepared who win through. My new epic premium podcast is specifically for aspiring Sergeants across the UK seeking promotion to Inspector. It will be particularly useful for processes currently running, adding to my recent Met Police specific support for example.
I cover a broad, time-based plan for your promotion preparation. I’ll show you how to answer forward-facing (aka ‘future-focused’) questions. I’ll even give you example questions and answers, even the sort of ‘probing’ questionsyou’ll face! Plus, I include priority-based statements, example scenarios and more in this 90+ minutes of epic prep.

Do You Know the Inspector’s Role?

Understanding the Inspector’s role is a solid starting point. Partly because it’s a foundation stone to support effective preparation. It also serves to support you in mentally and verbally making the links to you force priorities and knowing the leadership expectations for the Inspector rank.
You’ll also perform more effectively in written exercises (explaining your thinking) or in your interview responses e.g. alluding to the role functions and dimensions
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca
Imagine your very first Inspector promotion board question is this:
How would you describe the difference between the Sergeant and Inspector role?
They don’t come much easier than that. Or any harder if you are not prepared.
My Preparation Plan for Inspector Promotion podcast (S6E17) was inspired by working recently with two candidates from scratch, to prepare for three quite different force promotion processes. One individual was an Inspector preparing for Chief Inspector. The other a Detective Sergeant preparing for two intensive selection processes.
All involved applications, written exercises, presentations and interviews. These were intense, challenging, competitive, and spread out across weeks between different stages, so requiring sustained effort and commitment by both candidates throughout. It also required working around shifts and ongoing major investigations.
As I now go into a summer break, it was pleasing to have both officers kindly let me know their outcomes. In short, a clean sweep across all three processes. Here’s what the other side of effective preparation looks like, hot off the press:
“Hi Steve, just found out I passed my Chief Inspector board, so very pleased to say the least. 10 passed from 34 at board stage after initial paper sifting. I’ve now passed Sgt, Insp and Chief Inspector first time but I could not have done any of it without your help. I bought the full package this time and read everything you suggested and more! For me this time the 121 coaching chats I found the most beneficial to float ideas, get feedback on things and importantly give me confidence when I was flagging near the end. It didn’t just help for promotion it has helped me improve overall. I am extremely grateful Steve, you were so helpful and would highly recommend your services. Thanks again.”
“Very stiff test in relation to time in particular. I can happily update you with a successful outcome, which I am very, very pleased about. I have successfully navigated the process, which clearly I am super relieved about and to have passed two is an absolute bonus. Scored really well through the interview, 5s and 4s on the questions. Thank you for all your support over the phone, our sessions on TEAMS and your advice and guidance. It really has been invaluable, especially after the disappointment I experienced 12 months ago.”
Before I hang up my ‘gone fishing’ sign for a couple of weeks, I’m aware some of you face have ongoing promotion processes. Not least in the Metropolitan Sergeant to Inspector process which runs to the end of August.
With that in mind, I wanted to share with you some of the tips, insights and guidance that proved beneficial for both these individuals in achieving success. It’s also characteristic in my experience of supporting and receiving similar feedback from hundreds of individuals successful in promotion over the last 14 years…

Beginning With the End in Mind…
A good understanding of the role is so important, it deserves first place in the prompts you will build on your preparation plan on a page. This is one concept I cover in my preparation podcast and is an aid you can revisit every day, to stay focuses.
For some free insights, I’ve written previously about the various reasons Sergeants fail to reach Inspector. Not preparing or having a plan is a huge one. “What can you tell me about your plan?” is part of the early conversations I have with aspiring candidates. I often quickly establish “there isn’t a plan as such”. A common issue, but an understandable one for time poor officers who may be uncertain about how to prepare.
In my effective preparation plan podcast, I also cover the following:
- Future-Focused Statements: Building an evidence bank of future focused statements, linked to the priorities you will be focusing on. I provide examples to support your thinking and approach.
- Forward-Facing Interviews: In addition to example questions, I provide an example structured response using my unique ©ENAMEL structure. This is something I’ve called for years a ‘conversational management model’, as it supports a more human, conversational, and more strategic interview response.
- Scenario Immersion: The current Met process for Sergeant to Inspector promotion includes 5 role-specific leadership scenarios. I go through some of these at Inspector level, with suggested responses linked to organisational priorities, explaining key points.
- Self-Readiness Questions: Additionally, I cover 9 questions for you to use as your ‘self-readiness’ check to use as part of your preparation plan. These are the kind of aids and tools I use as part of 1-2-1 support to raise your awareness, close knowledge gaps, and incrementally boost your confidence.
- Probing Question: Finally, as a bonus I include in the podcast a probe or follow up question to one of the future focused questions to remind you these may follow on from presentations, briefing exercises or after you have provided you interview response.
Other companies charge you £hundreds, if not £thousands for this knowledge. And yet here it is, at your fingertips, for just a £4.99 per month podcast subscription. You can cancel anytime, but you won’t want to, since you’ll find even more content to keep you ahead of everyone else in relation to your promotion and leadership CPD.
On interview structures, my clients love my tried, tested and proven ©ENAMEL response model for forward- and rear-facing interview questions. So many testimonials demonstrate its decade of success, which has clearly inspired others to copy or adapt it. What is critically important, especially for Sergeant to Inspector (and beyond) promotion, is having a clear structure to answer challenging interview questions and demonstrate your strategic awareness. I’m proud ©ENAMEL continues delivering success for aspiring cops.
Proof is in the Pudding…
This effective preparation gets noticed and catches the attention of those assessing you on the promotion panels…
“Hi Steve, thank you for the excellent support. In the board, I felt calm & structured – I came away scoring 28/30 marks & a message from the DCI on the panel congratulating me for an excellent interview. Thank you!”
“Passed the Chief Inspector board which was very competitive! Your structure gave me reliable anchors as soon as I answered questions helping me navigate my answers. Structure was the key for me and my feedback highlighted I was clear, easy to follow and my values were conveyed with authenticity. Thanks Steve.”
I mentioned ENAMEL as a solid aid for supporting conversational, more strategic responses. Here’s some insights on just how helpful it can be…
“Hi Steve, just a positive feedback piece, Your materials helped me get through my force Inspector process… such a solid baseline to work from. I used ENAMEL for structuring my answers, a massive help.”
“Hi Steve, after dipping my Inspector process last year, I bought your Inspector Masterclass toolkit. I would come back to your videos and CVF breakdowns to ensure my actions in my development and my evidence/examples were at the right level. Your summaries of CVF into 4 rather than 6 helped me build that framework into my answers. I used a modified ENAMEL… with a bit of learning/reflection on the end.“
